Have you heard of Arinto or Fernão Pires? They’re two relatively unknown grapes (on this side of the world) but that make up many of the white blends coming out of Portugal. They’re grown across the country and can produce wines from dry to sickly sweet with their combination of intense citrus notes and honey spice.

The 2020 from Q.S.S Rare is a great example of a dry style; the citrus is most obvious with just a small hit of ginger on the finish.

Aromas of bright, ripe fruits leap out of the glass with notes of peach, apricot, and juicy citrus. The wine is light bodied with a vibrant acidity and floral note on the palate.

Try it with roast chicken or a fresh summery tart filled with beetroot and feta.

Some of Portugal’s native animal species are in decline, but don’t count them out just yet! Quinta de S. Sebastião created their “rare” range of wines to support organisations committed to helping endangered and threatened species in Portugal. This blend of Fernão (fur-now) Pires and Arinto is for the fishes!

Sardines can live up to the age of 14. They feed exclusively on plankton (microscopic plants and animals), including their own eggs, to a large extent. Their fat, which gives them the taste that is so much appreciated by the Portuguese, is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are important in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Sardines are an iconic element of Portuguese culture and gastronomy, but in the last 20 years there has been a decrease in their catches. Sustainable exploitation of this important resource, with adequate fishing effort, is one of the challenges we face if we are to continue to enjoy this resource for many long years.
