Discover the award-winning Babich Irongate Chardonnay 2022, a true gem from one of New Zealand's most highly acclaimed wineries. The Irongate range draws its name from the Irongate aquifer that runs 25 metres below the stony soils of the Gimblett Road vineyard, resulting in wines with flinty and lean characteristics that are highly sought-after by wine enthusiasts.
For over 100 years, the Babich family has been crafting exceptional wines using traditional winemaking techniques, passed down from generation to generation. Their commitment to sustainability and quality is evident in every bottle, making them a favorite among wine lovers who appreciate the craft and community of family-owned wineries.
The Babich Irongate Chardonnay 2022 is no exception. This wine is a true reflection of the family's dedication to producing high-quality wines that stand the test of time. With its extended cellaring potential, this wine is rated "Potential Classic" in Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wines.
Story and Heritage
The Babich family has been making wine for over 100 years, starting with Josip Babich who emigrated from Croatia to New Zealand in 1910. Today, the family's winery is run by Joe Babich, the third generation of the family to carry on the tradition. The Babich winery is located in the heart of New Zealand's wine country, with vineyards in Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, and Auckland.
The Irongate range is named after the aquifer that runs beneath the Gimblett Road vineyard, where the grapes for this Chardonnay are grown. The stony soils and unique climate of this region result in wines with a distinct character and flavor profile.
