Burgundy
Many many years ago, the northern part of France was covered by a vast ocean. The water is long gone, but the marine animals it held left a lasting impression. Because of their presence, the soils of Burgundy are made of highly prized limestone and limestone-rich clays, which Pinot Noir and Chardonnay absolutely love!
- Chardonnay makes up 50% and Pinot Noir 41% of plantings.
- The other varieties grown are Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, and Gamay.
Burgundy is landlocked and has a continental climate where it experiences all four seasons. Its winters are cold, and its summers are warm and temperate. In the northern regions of Chablis and Côte de Nuits, slope aspect is crucial to ensure the grapes get enough sunshine and warmth to ripen. In the southern regions of Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais slope aspect is still important, but the overall temperatures are warmer and more forgiving.
