Argentina is a country in South America that is sandwiched between the Andes Mountains to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It has a warm dry climate with long, hot days and endless summers. But because of its high elevation, nights and winters are cool here.
The Andes Mountains are a big reason why Argentina is so well suited to grape growing. Snow melt from the Andes is used to irrigate vineyards and crops. Its highest peak, Aconcagua, is 6,961 m above sea level – second in height only to Mt Everest. Its altitude causes a rain shadow effect on Argentina’s western edge. Many vineyards are planted amongst its foothills and are well above sea level. This helps keep the grapes warm during the day but cool at night.
The Andes Mountains prevent wet, coastal breezes from the Pacific and heavy rain clouds from passing from passing over them, leaving Argentina warm and dry. It’s exactly what happens on the West Coast of New Zealand and is why the East Coast is so much drier in comparison.
