Details
Chenin Blanc has a long history of being delicious and is a must try for those who like aromatic whites and are looking for something new. It originated in France’s Loire Valley back in the 9th century and was named after Mont Chenin. It’s been grown in France ever since but has slowly made its way around the globe. It was brought to South Africa in the 17th century, where it is known as Steen. It’s also been planted in several other countries, including New Zealand, with each one putting their own twist on this classic varietal.
1x Bogle Chenin Blanc 2020 (California, USA) Opening with spicy, floral aromatics, the Chenin Blanc is fragrant with persimmons and passion fruit. Cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks keeps the wine fresh and juicy, with a finish that shines of white peaches and nectarines.
1x Marcel Martin Chenin Blanc 2021 (France) Chenin Blanc is a grape synonymous with the Loire Valley in western France. It can be made in a wide range of styles from bone dry too lusciously sweet. This one from Marcel Martin has been produced from grapes picked from across the region and then blended to create a well-balanced and slightly off dry 2020. Notes of lemon, honey and subtle peach are found on the palate, with a lovely florality coming out on the nose
1x The Rhino Run Organic Chenin Blanc 2020 (South Africa) Supporting the Rhino’s and getting a delicious drop at the same time? By purchasing a bottle, or case, of this you can do both! Rhino Run was inspired by the global effort to conserve these majestic African animals, and with every bottle sold, a donation is made by the winery to different foundations supporting this cause. The Chenin itself is medium bodied, with easy acidity and a definite white peach and jasmine aroma.
1x Van Loveren Chenin Blanc 2023 (South Africa) The Loire Valley is known as the spiritual home of Chenin Blanc; however, in recent years South Africa has also started producing some great expressions of the grape. So much so, that now Chenin Blanc makes up the majority of the white wines produced from the region. This 2020 from Van Loveren is a fantastic example of South African Chenin. Its aromatic, filled with fresh fruit like Nashi pear, tart green apples and lemon and has a grippy palate, a result of post-fermentation lees contact.
1x Growers Mark Tansley Road Gisb Chenin Blanc 2018 (Gisborne, New Zealand) Toasty notes of peach, fig and granny smith apple. The palate offers a rounded creamy texture with a herbaceous structure. Pairs perfectly with roast chicken, other white meats and roast vegetables.
1x Blaauwklippen Estate Chenin Blanc 2022 (South Africa) 100% Chenin Blanc. The winemaking process involves careful handling of hand-harvested grapes, which are chilled overnight before processing. Whole bunch pressing into stainless steel tanks is followed by a 24-hour juice settling period. The wine undergoes cold alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, utilizing wild or natural yeasts. Extended lees contact for three months, along with regular stirring, results in a lush palate texture. The wine boasts green apple and quince notes, complemented by hints of straw, pineapple, and fresh lemon zest. Its creamy palate leads to a smooth, elegant, and refreshing finish.
